The legend of El Dorado and the Cities of Gold has its roots in a very real history. This story is that of the Inca Empire. An all-powerful empire, which reached its peak in the 15th century before experiencing a brutal fall with the Spanish conquest. In the absence of writings that could be deciphered by Europeans, their official history was summed up for centuries in the accounts of Spanish chroniclers… who had every interest in twisting reality to their advantage.
Today, archaeologists are questioning their stories and raising new questions: Were the Incas really bloodthirsty warriors? Did they really build a gigantic empire without the use of writing? Is there any truth in the myth of the cities of gold?
